Though we eat lots of rich and wonderful dishes at Easter, the rigors of Lent help to heal our lust for food and other forms of self-gratification at least a bit. And having two fast days a week plus four fasting seasons a year provides lots of needed practice. Self-denial becomes part of the rhythm of our life, which is something that most of us need. Fasting also makes it possible to feast, to enjoy a really great meal as a sign of joy.
